– Jeanette Winterson on The Waves by Virginia Woolf. (A Veil of Words from Art Objects: Essays on Ecstasy and Effrontery)
my family is sooooo funny tbh like,,,, on my mothers side theyre all repressed catholic farmers who never left their village and hate their neighbors for obscure familial reasons while the women end up either locked up in psych wards or super into church things or alcoholics… the men are super violent and abusive or end up killing themselves… they fuck their own cousins so like a third of my family has severe health problems and all,,,,,
meanwhile, on my fathers side? theyre all gay autistic artists who are severely depressed and also atheist like. when i came out to her my grandma CAME OUT AS BI, my cousins are lesbians & happily married, my great-aunt was a gnc/nonbinary butch lesbian,,,,,,
its so funny cuz when i go visit my mothers family im like,,, the Gay Intellectual Cousin but when i visit my fathers family im just. another book lesbian. the one who follows familial tradition. a Real Honorable Member of the Family
so like. i dont believe theres a gay gene or something. but 🤔🤔🤔🤔 half the women in my family are gay & i didnt even know it before coming out lmao
1. all day at the beach sleepy. warm skin. wet hair. salt and sand and green apple-scented shampoo. bed sheet tides pulling up and down stomach flips into mermaid dreams.
2. milky tired. early nights. wondering if you are getting sick. medicine light bones. eyelids melting closed. dizzy, dizzy, spinning into sleep.
3. drowsy car rides. soft radio buzz. pillow on the window. pulling on your seatbelt. waking up and not knowing where you are.
4. college tired. forget what you are doing. no amount of coffee really helps. messy hair. nothing is making sense. passed out in class.
these Victorian male doctors / authors keep on coming up with more and more obscure, ridiculous, weirdly specific, and poorly-reasoned ways for exactly how women are biologically inferior to men and it’s like. come on now Sir Benjamin Walter Puddingham III. you’re just making shit up now.
[“The trials I have yet made on the sensitivity of different persons confirms the reasonable expectation that it would on the whole be higher among the intellectually ablest.
[…] I found as a rule that men have more delicate powers of discrimination than women, and the business experience of life seems to confirm this view. The tuners of pianofortes are men, and so I understand are the tasters of tea and wine, the sorters of, wool, and the like. These latter occupations are well salaried, because it is of the first moment to the merchant that he should be rightly advised on the real value of what he is about to purchase or to sell. If the sensitivity of women were superior to that of men, the self-interest of merchants would lead to their being always employed ; but as the reverse is the case, the opposite supposition is likely to be the true one
Ladies rarely distinguish the merits of wine at the dinner-table, and though custom allows them to preside at the breakfast-table, men think them on the whole to be far from successful makers of tea and coffee.”]
“women are closer to medical idiocy than men because they uhhhh *throws dart* aren’t as good at making *spins wheel* coffee”
diet culture has ruined our mothers, our sisters, our daughters, it passes the discomfort with our own bodies as natural, it makes our hatred common, we punish ourselves by eating or not eating, by guilt and resolutions, but no one seems to care, not even those who love us.
how can people be so rude and don’t feel bad afterwards… When I don’t say thank you or don’t smile back I’ll think about it for 3 months straight and have flashbacks
