the sex positivity movement was truly one of the worst things that has happened to this generation, particularly because it was doubled down with online self expression. This might sound weird, but let me explain. Sex positivity itself, same as liberal feminism which is a large part of, encourages freedom of choice which sounds good on paper. However, sexual or romantic choices are not meant to be analyzed, examined, discussed, but merely accepted. Analysis would provide us with the conclusion of course that all choices in life were not made in a vacuum, they do not exist outside of larger societal conditions. It should not be surprising that most women lean towards heterosexuality or submissiveness given the patriarchal ideology that we are deeply affected by. Yes, absolutely we should absolutely examine if we are truly heterosexual too. . With internet, and even larger spread of pornography, the mainstream of which just gets more abusive and exploitative, this advocation of freedom of choice just get more dangerous for young women.
While previous generations were warned not to be what we deem nowadays “authentic” online, we rebelled against that, encouraging complete freedom of expression. What could have gone possibly wrong but everything? Tumblr was basically the network for young women to post their thoughts, stories, fantasies, pictures. It was a public diary for many of us, while we dealt with all the trauma of even existing in the world as a woman. Tumblr was absolutely the “perfect” sex positive social network / blog site. I mean it was also known as the safe site to post pornography and nude photos on, a place where it wont get censored. Many young girls associated the attention they would acquire by posting their pictures, and still do, with their own self worth. Social media in general is somewhat a race in who gets more likes, and who gets more comments. That gets more alarming when sexuality is involved, and for women, social media becomes a race between who gets most attention from men. And of course men started self-identifying as sex positive, which was absolutely in tune with mainstream sexual politics. I do think all of this is still happening, but young women are becoming more anonymous about their identities and what they share. Once revenge pornography became a well discussed topic, once there were more and more scandals connected with previous usage of social media I think many of us became very aware how we are not free online. Radical feminism (one that is trans inclusive of course, it’s ridiculous i need to emphasize this) and materialist feminism saved my life honestly. I was miserable as an attention seeking “sex positive” woman. I am well aware of the vaguely political / gendered connotations of the term “attention seeking”, but arent we as women encouraged to consistently seek love and attention from men. Many of us realized years later we might not even be attracted to men, but mistook desire to be recognised as attractive for love.
