“Everything we write
will be used against us
or against those we love.
These are the terms,
take them or leave them.
Poetry never stood a chance
of standing outside history.”

— Adrienne Rich, Excerpt of North American Time from Later Poems: Selected and New 1971-2012

At lunchtime folks were complaining about like – the second they try to speak in English, they get ID’d as French

Like no matter how much effort they put ‘Hello – how are you’ immediately they get like a ‘Oh! I love the French!!’

“It’s not even like ‘You guys wouldn’t happen to be French, would you?’ Not even a question mark. They are just sure of it.”

“You know one of my friends and I were trying to buy some clothes and so they asked what size I was and I said a single word and they responded ‘Oh I’ve been to France once!’ like no fucking hesitation. You just have this feeling that you have a stamp on your forehead. Like you’re branded with the blue, white, red.”

Other synesthetes: “Crossed wires in my brain cause me to see symphonies as ripples of color or taste blueberries every time I feel the texture of smooth wood. Sometimes it’s inconvenient or upsetting, but I’ve integrated it into my life and it enriches my experience of the world!”

Me: “This unknown number makes me uncomfortable because its digits are unwisely combined, causing tension. Nine is such an asshole.”
