anyway Ovid was just a bad writer. plainly mediocre at his job. really shitty dude, yes, but really shitty artist too!

he was so misogynistic he actually sabotaged his own work like…. he consciously refused to nuance his views and accept to give female characters a psychology which would have given his book a way better emotional balance for the reader, a much more engaging piece of fiction, and a more useful catharsis altogether. he had some wonderful material just lying around and did a shitty job at using it and basically ruined his own book because he hated women and especially rape survivors so much!!! 

how shitty of an artist do you have to be to refuse to make a better book because it goes against your bigotry??? 

just imagine if the Metamorphoses had been written by a woman. what we would be likely to have now would be this amazing book full of enchanting stories, many of them being heart-breaking because she would actually have acknowledged that women are humans with a wide range of emotions and would probably have mentioned trauma even if differently than our modern definition of trauma. not to mention that it would have literally twice more readers because let’s face it, reading the Metamorphoses as a woman and a rape survivor is a fucking trip, dude. its excruciating!! 

i mean yes we got it you hate women – but there are a lot of misogynistic authors who wrote amazingly nuanced, deep, interesting, lively and likable heroines not gonna tell names but yall have at least one in mind. because at least, those excuses of human beings were decent fucking artists who actually cared about their job!!!!!!

Ovid could have written such a good fiction book about mythology stories if he just had stepped back a bit on the misogyny. but he didnt!!!! and this book is actually bad especially considering its potential and the richness of its subject!!!! it’s boring and repetitive and theres no challenge of anything anywhere!!! Ovid used mythology as a tool to justify his and his peers’ misogyny and it makes me so mad tbh. not to mention the fact hes literally glorifying dictators and justifies paedophilia but

i didnt think ovid could go worse than it already is but i just read with my two own eyes that “Orpheus teached the people of Thrace to transfer their love on male children and to pick the first flowers of the short spring of life that’s before youth” like hello????? HELLO?????????

literally goes like “oh no orpheus is sad :(((( he stopped having sex with women :(((((( also teached paedophilia to people from his native land. here is a bucolic description of a hill.”

ok but can you imagine a worse, more terrifying fate than medusa’s one? just imagine. first of all you’re raped in your goddess’ temple. which, apart from the obvious trauma, means you can’t keep doing what you devoted your entire life to. your goddess gifts you with the ability to turn those you look at into stone and your hair into snakes so that you can defend yourself and be a threat rather than a victim to men. and then?????? a fucking MAN decides hes gonna hunt you down and slaughter you for…. sport like just because he can?????? and not only does he kill you but he keeps your head as a weapon???????? effectively using you and your body for his own purpose exactly like your rapist??????????????? like??? and this man is considered a hero while you’ll be remembered as a monstruous, dangerous entity???????????????????? medusa deserved better smh

i want to emphasize the fact that i just checked ovid’s metamorphoses again and every occurrence of medusa’s name is, in fact, said by perseus or used to characterize him. its not enough to have her raped and slaughtered; we also need to remove her completely from history, to the point she’s not even given her own story. we only learn about her story via perseus who explains in a single sentence where his weapon comes from, emphasizing the “danger” that she was & how clever he was – without mentioning why he went to murder her in the first place. after that, there are about 12 or 15 occurrences of her name – each time referring to her head used as a weapon by perseus, i.e as a lifeless object strapped from her humanity and personal identity, a part of her body used by a man for his personal desire, i.e exactly the same depersonalization process that lead to her being raped.
