the human life is a strained and tense one. i envy the life of a smooth rock resting on the beach… warmed by the sun… unaware of the trials and tribulations of sentient life…
My linguistics professor went, “Hot take! The abstract noun of ‘dead’ is ‘DEADITY,’” and the entire lecture hall erupted into applause.
Ok i know this was a dream but like, honestly? Ive spent too much time in academic spaces not to know that “deadity” would 1000% be something relevant when talking about Heidegger & probably used in the English translations of Derrida lmao
i think good theory and academic writing comes from a place of tenderness…like the drive to analyze something and understand how it works comes from a desire for closeness. i think in general all of academia can be divided into either understanding human systems and how we live together or understanding the rules of the world we all share…good academic writing should convey that in some way and good art should prompt that kind of response in people. anything smart should also be tender. even myths! in the beginning myths were a means of explaining things like natural phenomenon and dying but they were also stories and the occasion of their telling was a way for people to socialize and to be close to each other. academia is just that but fancier
