I didn’t want to leave this in the tags of someone’s heartfelt post I just read but I just want to let you all know:

Parchment doesn’t yellow with age. “Yellowing parchment” is not a thing. Parchment is animal skin. It’s pretty much the color it is once it is tawed unless it gets dirty in which case it’s gonna look browner.

Yellowing is something that happens to paper, made of organic fibers like linen, cotton, hemp, or wood pulp. It happens due to a combo of environmental conditions and paper composition causing acidification over time. Machine-made wood pulp papers are more susceptible to acidification because of how wood pulp is chemically treated to make it suitable for papermakibg. Handmade rag paper can yellow and become brittle, but it doesn’t happen as much/to the same degree unless something happened to the paper later on (example: the book was washed and bleached to clean it. Don’t do this it’s the worst).

Moral of the story:

700 year old medieval manuscript written on parchment: not yellow

400 year old book printed on handmade rag paper: probably looks whiter than a crest commercial

Paperback from 1961: old yeller

Thank you for coming to my TED talk

answer 10 questions, tag 10 people, and write 10 more questions for tagged people to answer.

1. do you have a writing schedule or set deadlines?

i dont, really. Well, this year im taking two creative writing classes tho! so, my big prose poetry project has a deadline bc it will be my creative writing final project, and i have to write a poem a week for my poetry class haha

2. what music do you tend to listen to when writing?

Usually classical music, or something soothing, because im often triggering by my own writing (i tend to try and write about traumatic stuff lmao so i gotta be realistic and back in the moment. writing sucks sometimes)

3. what have been some influential books or films or tv shows that have shaped what you write?

omg. there are way too much books. ive done nothing but read books my whole life. the author who certainly shaped me the most is (in poetry) Philippe Jaccottet. Honestly, if you can read French, you should give him a try! His book (novella? idk) L’Obscurité (The Darkness – dunno if its been translated into english) is probably the biggest influence on my current prose poetry.

Other influences: WoW (the whole concept of the void).

I also got inspired by Apollinaire, and, in prose, Virginia Woolf, Flaubert of course, Sartre, Sylvia Plath… Really, most 20th century writers inspired me lmao. Lets not forget Diderot, Renée Vivien & Monique Wittig of course!

4. which cliche or trope is your favourite?

Before realizing i was a nb lesbian i always had a really weird fixation on… you know, classical theater plays? like, Shakespeare, Marivaux, things like this, in which the young girl dresses up as a man (bonus if a girl flirts with her lmao). im really weak for this trope

5. do you have a character based off yourself?

The child in the first short story of the book im writing is strongly based on my experiences with elitist music classes. Also the main character of my third story is based on my highschool experience of homophobia, suicide attempts, abuse and mental illness.  I like to write about past experiences, because thats what i know, but while transforming them, you see? making them separate bits of fiction, and a story that can stand by itself. I dont see the point of just telling a story, like “this happened to me and now youve got to read it”. I work a lot on my style. Its also a sort of protection, i guess. Distanciating myself from the painful memories, sort of.

6. have you taken any creative writing classes?

i met several writers, and went to creative writings…. seminars? like, by myself. it was more of a “i give you a theme and were all going to write by ourselves then read it and comment on it” kind of thing (when i was in highschool). and as i said, i took 2 creative writing classes this year! its a novelty, there is no creative writing classes cultures like in the US in France. Were very academic and theoretic here lmao

7. when you write is it by hand or typed up?

i usually write poetry in my Notes app on my phone, or i use my computer. when the poem is done, i write it down in a notebook! and my stories are written on computer

8. which oc of yours is the most likely to be found raiding the fridge in the middle of the night and what would they be eating?

mh. i dont really write OCs? like, ive got characters, but i dont really focus on them as a person. i write more about moments, crisis times, things like this. theyre not real people, and i dont want the reader to think of them as such.

that being said… the child from my first story is way too scared of her parents to raid anything in the middle of the night lmao. The teen hides almond chocolate in her bookshelves. But its really not relevant to their stories haha

9. what would you say your theme song is?

“Moondown” by William Sheller. Or “Le Rosier jaune” / “Monocle et col dur” by Juliette.

10. how many different genres have you tried writing/written and which ones are easiest for you?

Ive only tried poetry (free verse mostly, more recently prose poetry) and short stories. the first thing i “seriously” wrote was a kinda criminal? story when i was 8. It was called Who killed the three little pigs? and AWFULLY bad lmao

by far the easiest thing for me is free verse poetry tho, and poetic prose

– neologisms and gramatically incorrect sentences: yes or no?

– the best compliment you got for your writing?

Let me read Who Killed The Three Little Pigs.

Why the fuck have I still not heard the mainstream media cover this? Why do I have to learn this from tumblr?

manic pixie dream girl: aries, saggitarius, virgo, libra
apathetic goblin delusion woman: gemini, leo, aquarius, scorpio
emotional nymph hallucination lady: pisces, taurus, capricorn, cancer

dubiousculturalartifact:

i think the most egregious example of the manic pixie dream girl trope was this play i but I just remembered seeing it, several years ago…

it was about this sad-sack guy driving across the country to try and reunite his old band for one last show

he’s accompanied by this girl who he was in the band with, back in the day… and he was in love with her then, and she’s cool & smart & funny & talks only to him for the entire play, even when the rest of the band joins him on the drive

& at the end of the play it turns out that she was a ghost the whole time, nobody else in the play could see or hear her, & the ‘last show’ he kept referring to is actually going to be her funeral wake bcs she died..

That her ghost had accompanied them on this trip bcs he was grieving & she wanted to help him let go of her…

which, you know, was a surprise & it was really emotional & legit the play was pretty good

But I just started thinking about it randomly…

And I keep being struck by the fact that the play only works if the entire audience is so used to the idea that a female character would literally only speak to the main male character for the entire length of a narrative.

Would only converse with him, interact with him, even when there were other people around.

That even as he talked about what he was doing next, she never discussed their future goals. She never touched any props or anyone other than him.

That nothing she did or said would genuinely have anything to do with herself as a person, except in the context of how he felt about her.

The entire play hinges on the audience not expecting anything hinky about a female character who acts like that,

& most of the audience bought it, hook, line, and sinker.

even I did. there was genuine feeling of surprise in the room

and I just…

A woman can literally be an incorporeal ghost & as long as she is emotionally supportive of a man we see her as a fully realistically person

if that isn’t a sad indictment of how female characters get treated idk what is, honestly

ETA: FOR THE LOVE OF HECK, THE POINT OF THIS POST IS NOT ‘CHARACTERS ARE SECRET GHOSTS SOMETIMES’, PLEASE STOP CITING THE SIXTH SENSE.

THE POINT OF THIS POST IS I CAN THINK OF MANY OTHER STORIES WHERE THE OSTENSIBLY FLESH-AND-BLOOD FEMALE ROMANTIC INTEREST OF THE HERO COULD HAVE BEEN REVEALED TO HAVE BEEN A INCORPOREAL GHOST AT THE END OF THE STORY.
AND THE REST OF THE NARRATIVE WOULD STILL WORK FINE, BECAUSE SHE WAS OTHERWISE THAT UTTERLY LACKING IN AN INTERIOR LIFE.

FURTHER ETA:
THE PLAY WAS CALLED ‘Back Kitchen Release Party’ PLEASE STOP SENDING ME ASKS ABOUT WHAT THE PLAY WAS CALLED

“The buzz word in popular feminism today is empowerment. When I became a feminist many years ago, the word we used was liberation. Unlike empowerment, liberation is a collective concept which means that even if my life is all rosy and “empowered,” it doesn’t mean shit for those women who are doing low paid jobs while trying to raise families. In fact, there is a very good chance that elite women’s empowerment is built on the backs of other women whose exploited labor provides the goods and services that enable a good career and a comfortable lifestyle. The low pay of nannies, cooks, cleaners, sweat shop workers, and day care providers means that wealthier women are freed up to make a salary that no doubt does feel empowering.”
