On this day, 30 November 1966 Barbados declared independence from Britain. Following the Spanish eradicating the native population of Barbados, the British laid claim to the island 1625. After sugarcane was introduced in 1640 tens of thousands of enslaved people African descent were brought into work on the plantations and they soon became a large majority of the population. Slave rebellions forced the eventual abolition of slavery, however British rule remained.
