(yeah, by present subjunctive too, but that’s not what I’m talking about here)

If you read a book written in the 19th century or older, you can see : “Il ne savait pas ce qui fût le mieux.” Today we would write : “Il ne savait pas ce qui serait le mieux.”

And ??? Originally the subjunctive mood would serve to express what’s uncertain or possible (but not accomplished yet), and it means this function has just been… transmitted to conditional (a mood that supposes a condition for a fact to happen)
