I really want to see a production of Faust set in the modern day where, when Mephistopheles first shows up, he’s this genuinely terrifying and grotesque visage. But then after Faustus sends him away for being too ugly, he shows up again as just a mild to moderately attractive guy in a Hawaiian shirt and jeans.
Like, he’s got weird, vaguely creepy Steve Buscemi eyes and gives off a really spooky vibe, but for the most part he acts super chill. He’s very flirty with Faustus and he has the wardrobe of someone who’s musical diet is 90% Jimmy Buffet.
Faustus: Wow, you really are killing fashion one shirt at a time.
Mephistopheles: So sue me, it’s the middle of winter in Germany and I’d like to live on island time for a day! Beach shirts relax me!!
