leftists should not write off psychology as a discipline. i’m not just saying this because i study biopsychology. yes the pharmaceutical-industrial complex is bad and yes psychoanalysis is terrible and misogynistic and yes there is a lot of ableism within the institution, especially with the pathologization of mental illness, gay/trans identities, and women in general, but studying the psychology of people under capitalism is absolutely necessary. studying the psychology of oppressive regimes is necessary. figuring out the best ways to help people recover from trauma (in a way that does not feed back into the pharmaceutical-industrial complex actually) requires understanding psychology. like no one would ever fathom giving up on medicine as a discipline just because of its reactionary components (the biomedical model of health is fraught with a bunch of issues, and of course ableism/racism/misogyny etc are built into the institution) because we know that we need to understand medicine to help people survive and thrive, so the same logic applies here.
