it’s really idiotic to expect female celebrities to paragons of feminism imo. most of them will be liberal feminists if they do identify as feminists (again see feminism being conceptualized as an identity rather than as political praxis) because they’re wealthy and at the top of the ladder, especially if they’re white & cis. there are some female celebrities who do offer lucid and insightful critiques of patriarchy but by and large i’m not going to be a fan of a female celebrity based on whether she’s a feminist or not because i’m not looking at female celebs to guide my politics or my feminist values.
of course this doesn’t excuse female celebrities who are terrible people but at the same time when i see think piece after think piece about why x female celeb’s “behavior wasn’t feminist” i’m like….. 1) why are you surprised, 2) why scrutinize women to this degree, and 3) does it always have to be that deep? especially because a lot of the times these think pieces are just directed at being patronizing toward female celebs of color, especially black female celebs.
also yeah i won’t be a fan of any female celebrity who goes out of her way to specifically call herself an “anti-feminist” or denigrates the feminist movement. that’s out of the question. but neither am i going to expect Anything out of the “feminism” of female celebrities. i’ll love them for their work and what they represent to me but i won’t think of them as role models of feminist thought.
