A lot of feminism now wants to avoid that interaction between men and women is dangerous for women, point blank. Every interaction any woman has with any man is a risk, a roll of the dice, and she is potentially subject to anything from humiliation to standard disrespect to dehumanizing treatment to actual physical violence during every interaction. There is no way around this in a world so thoroughly saturated in violence against women- most men are not suitable for interaction with women on a human to human basis because they are incapable of seeing women as full human beings. This is true for all kinds of women, including and very importantly heterosexual women by virtue of the intimacy of their potential interactions with men and the fact that they are all much more likely to engage with men in places that are not public than I am personally, by virtue of the fact that I almost never interact with men outside of public places. This is obviously not to say that women never hurt other women, and certainly it would be silly of me to think that as a lesbian who intentionally limits serious social connections with heterosexual women due to their homophobia and the effect I’ve seen that have on many lesbians I know, but the fact is that men’s propensity for violence against women permeates all interactions between them.
